Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by or crushing hazards created by the sudden and unpredictable descent of vehicles elevated by hydraulic automotive lifts: a) Shop area - Hydraulic lift, located at the north end of the shop at the right-hand bay, had a safety rod that was broken and had been removed, resulting in employees being exposed to the inadvertent lowering of the lift when the lift is raised. ABATEMENT VERIFICATION REQUIRED Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the recommendations in ANSI B153.1-1990, Section 4. Construction, 4.1.11 Locking Device. Automotive lifts shall be equipped with an automatic mechanical device to hold the lift in the fully extended position. The device shall have a strength factor of not less than 3, based on the rated load capacity.
