Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by and crushing injuries: (a) Service Area- Employees worked under vehicles elevated by surface-mounted automotive lifts that were used without stops (locking devices) on the telescoping swing arms that supported the vehicles. The employees were exposed to crushing and struck by hazards in the event that the vehicles would collapse from their elevated positions. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to include, but not be limited to the following: (1) Conform to the American National Standard Institute / Automotive Lift Institute standard for Automotive Lift Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
