Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by unsecured air hose connections. a) On the port midships of the SBI 551 barge, where eight air hose connections were not secured together with retainer clips or lanyards. These hoses were used to provide air to air horns for ventilating cargo tanks during painting operations. Employees were exposed to a struck-by hazard. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method for abatement is to properly secure the hose couplings with safety clips, retainers or other positive means to prevent the couplings from becoming disconnected in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling portions of the hoisted load or the hoist of the Load Lifter underhung crane located in the Machine Shop. a) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to perform "frequent" inspections in accordance with American National Standard Institute (ANSI) B30.11-1998, 11-2.1.2 and "periodic" inspections in accordance with ANSI B30.11-1998, 11-2.1.3, Monorail Systems and Underhung Cranes.
