What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to the hazard of incompatible chemical storage which would result
in the release of
hydrogen cyanide gas:
a): On or about October 16, 2003, in the chemical storage room, an open
drum of zinc cyanide
was stored adjacent to bags of ammonium nitrate. Inadvertant mixing of
the zinc cyanide and
ammonium nitrate could result in employee exposure to hydrogen cyanide gas.
b): On or about October 16, 2003, in the chemical storage room, drums of
copper cyanide were
stored approximately 10 feet away from drums of sulfuric acid.
Inadvertant mixing of the
copper cyanide and sulfuric acid could result in employee exposure to
hydrogen cyanide gas.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the
hazard is to physically
separate cyanides from acids by storing cyanides in a separate storage
room to prevent
inadvertant mixing.tant
