Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to head injuries:
a)  On or about 01/29/03 employees were exposed to the hazards of striking
against
cooking timers in the work zone.  The timers are located in the immediate
work zone of the
employees, which could cause head injuries.  These timers are suspended
from the vent hoods.
The timers also extend into the aisle way approximately 11 inches
(.2794m).  These timer are
at a height of approximately 67 inches (1.701m).  When the employees are
in their work zone
performing their normally assigned job function, they can, and have hit
their heads on the timers
on several occasions.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
the
hazard would be to relocate the timers out of the immediate work zone of
the employees.  One
possible abatement location is to mount the timer directly to the vent,
thus eliminating the
suspension/ mounting poles thus raising the height of the of the timers.
Also remove the side
mounting brackets and mount the timer flush with the control box, thus
reducing the distance
that the timers extend into the aisle way.
