Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of exposure to cytotoxic/antineoplastic drugs:
a)The employer did not ensure that health care workers working with
cytotoxic drugs
(antineoplastic drugs) such as but not limited to bleomycin, cisplatin,
dacarbazine, etoposide,
fluorouracil, methotrexate, mitomycin, mitoxantrone, vinblastine, and
vincristine were trained
in proper handling procedures and/or spill procedures, and decontamination
procedures.  The
Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) was last certified in April 1998 and the
certification expired in
April 1999.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement to correct this
hazard is to have
the biological safety cabinet certified yearly, develop spill and
decontamination
procedures,
install an eye wash in the immediate area and follow the guidelines
established by the American
Society of Hospital Pharmacist (ASHP), 1990, ASHP Technical Assistance
Bulletin on Handling
Cytotoxic and Hazardous Drugs, or the OSHA Technical Manual (TED 1.15)
