Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to strangulation and broken bones from operating a cord connected portable pipe threading machine that was not equipped with a mandatory, momentary contact device as required by the American National Standards Institute ANSI B208.1, Section 4.4. One feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to install a constant pressure foot switch so that if the employee is caught in the rotating parts of the machine, the machine can be stopped by removing ones foot from the switch.
