General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to an amputation hazard. Employees were operating an American Log splitter Model AM25HH- 816H. One employee was operating the control valve while the other employee placed the wood in position to be split. As the employee placed a piece of wood in position the other employee pushed the lever to bring the ram forward, causing the other employee to get his fingers caught between the wedge and the piece of wood. One feasible means of abatement would be to follow the manufacturer's safety recommendations making this a one man job.
