General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential fire hazard while working around the unprotected natural gas flexible lines that were running along the floor of the Neon gas area: (a) Direct Sign Wholesale, Inc., 1100 East 64th Avenue, Denver, CO 80229: The company used natural gas as a fuel source for their bunsen burners. The flexible gas lines were run from the gas manifold along the floor to the burners. These lines were not protected from damage which could result in a leak of the flammable gas into the work area and create a potential fire hazard. This is a violation of section 8.5.1 "Connecting Gas Equipment" of the NFPA, ANZI Z223.1-2002 National Fuel Gas Code, 2002 Edition. Abatement Note: Abatement Certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter"). Abatement Note: Please provide documentation that the hoses used to connect the natural gas manifold to the burners are acceptable as outlined section 8.5.1 in the above NFPA standard. In addition, please provide documentation that each hose connection has a shut-off up stream of the burner.
