Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: Employees working on the Gates GMC Dealership Construction Project were exposed to crushing hazards. On 11/03/03 approximately 18 trusses and two exterior walls collapsed. The prefabricated wood trusses and the exterior walls were not adequately braced to prevent collapse. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines outlined in HIB-91 Summary Sheet for Handling, Installing & Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses and Walls.s
