Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fractures, strains, and sprains from improper use of moving equipment: Verizon - On or about December 29, 2003, an employee suffered a compound leg fracture when a relay rack or unit and hand truck weighing approximately 700 pounds fell and pinned an employee against the floor. The accident occurred as a result of improper hand truck use. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to train or instruct all employees in the proper use and selection of moving equipment.
