Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a load which was being raised with a hydraulic jack: a)Jobsite: Employees raising the steel joist were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load while working underneath the load which was being raised with a JET 15 ton Hydraulic Jack, on or about 5-8-03. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to instruct the employees on the safe operation of the JET 15 ton Hydraulic Jack and prohibit employees from working under a load which is being raised until the load is secured, in accordance with ANSI standard titled "Jacks" B30.1-1975 section 1-3.2.(f) Recommended Operational Procedures.
