Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)Shift supervisors walked on the conveyor line at the beginning and end of each shift, inspecting for conveyor damage and looking for stray packages, while relying on an off button to prevent the conveyor from starting up and thereby exposing them to falls of 54 1/2 inches to 74 1/2 inches, as well as exposing them to head injuries from the bars which crossed the conveyor. Among feasible abatement methods to correct the hazard is to ensure that each supervisor involved in the daily conveyor inspections, has the ability to lock out at the nearest emergency stop button to prevent the intentional start up of the conveyor while the employee is doing the inspections.
