Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees who were utilizing presence sensing devices as the method for point of operation guarding during the operation of a hydraulic press. Corrigan Manufacturing Inc. - Presence sensing device used as point of operation guarding on a hydraulic press was not functioning as designed. The transmitter for the presence sensing device was not aligned properly with the receiver rendering it inoperable. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct this hazard is to instruct and train operators on safe work procedures before allowing operation of any hydraulic power press covered by ANSI B11.2 1982 and ensure by adequate supervision that correct operating procedures are being followed.
