Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazards associated with being struck by a falling
hydraulic lift.
Maintenance shop, lift number 2:  The safety mechanism on the vehicle lift
did not function
properly allowing the lift to fall approximately 22 inches striking an
employee on the left
shoulder and injuring the shoulder.
Feasible methods to correct the hazard include, but are not limited to:
1. ANSI B153.1, Section 7.2  Develop a set of operating instructions and
post them in
a conspicuous location and ensure that employees are trained.
2. Provide more in depth training for employees who operate and maintain
the lift.
3. ANSI B153.1, Section 7.3:  Contract with an outside company to provide
regular
maintenance on the lift and lift mechanisms.
4. Replace the lift.
5. Maintain inspection records to track parts replaced and corrections
made to ensure
integrity of components of the lift.
6. Keep and follow the manufacturer's instructions.s
