Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) were exposed to fall hazards while working from a wooden pallet without fall protection while elevated by a forklift truck. Storage Room: Employees standing on a wooden pallet attached to the forks of a powered industrial truck were exposed to fall hazards from heights up to 10'9" when they were being elevated to shelving racks to retrieve or put away stock. Feasible and acceptable methods of abatement include but are not limited to the following: 1.Utilize platforms designed for use in elevating personnel with powered industrial trucks that meet the requirements of ASME/ANSI B56.1-1988. 2.Develop a procedure for employees to access the storage racks utilizing the portable stairs and/or the forklift. 3.Train all employees in proper procedure for retrieving stock from the storage racks.
