40.1-51.1(a) of the Code of Virginia:  The employer, E & E Machine Shop,
Inc., had not furnished a place of
employment which is free from recognized hazards that were causing or
likely to cause serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were operating cranes that had not been
inspected for deficiencies  that may constitute
safety hazards.
In the Milling and Production Areas, employees are exposed to contusions
by not conducting periodic (annual)
inspections of the Yale 2 Ton Jib Crane and a Contrx Industries 1 Ton Jib
Crane to determine any deficiencies  that
may constitute a safety hazard.  The Periodic Inspection should include
examination of the hooks for deformation or
cracks; limit switches; deformed, cracked or corroded members; loose bolts
or rivets; cracked or worn sheaves and
drums; worn, cracked or distorted parts such as pins, bearing, shafts,
gears, rollers, locking and clamping devices;
excessive wear of chain drive sprockets and excessive chain stretch and
electrical apparatus.  One feasible and
acceptable abatement method, among other methods, would be to conduct
annual documented inspections of the jib
cranes such as those called for by ANSI B30.16, American Nation Standard
Safety Code for Cranes and Overhead
Hoists.
