Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of flying debris: At this location in the warehouse, employees were exposed to the hazards associated with flying PVC piping and shards. Shop compressed air regulated at 125 psi was piped from the receiver to the air hose via Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) piping. Plastic pipe is subject to failure and shattering when exposed to the pressures of compressed gas. Joints of PVC piping are connected by means of adhesive which is subject to failure and can result in the piping being propelled like missiles across the shop. A means of abatement would be to replace the PVC piping with a type suitable for the transmission of compressed gas.
