Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall and struck by hazards from wood truss collapse: (a)Maliszewski Dairy Farm located off State Hwy 93, Arcadia, WI: Employees were exposed to fall and struck by hazards when installing Lam-Ply trusses spanning 72' without adequate bracing. Nine employees were exposed to fall/struck-by hazards when the wooden trusses collapsed. Abatement notes: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement would follow the recommendations of the Building Component Safety Information (BSCI) of the Wood Truss Council of America (WTCA) and Truss Plate Institute (TPI) for the installation of the gable-end trusses with bracing installed from the ground and subsequent installation/bracing of the Lam-Ply trusses (composite structural lumber) according to the National Design Standard for Wood Construction by the American Forest & Paper Association (AFPA). Abatement certification and documentation required for this item.
