29 CFR 1960.8(a):  The head of each agency shall furnish to each employee
employment and
a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are
causing or are likely to
cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to the hazard
of being caught in the conveyor of the L3 x-ray machines that could not be
reliably shut off
quickly in an emergency:
a) Baggage Screening Area - On or about 9/25/03, four out of the seven
emergency
stop buttons on the L3 x-ray machines were covered with plastic boxes in
such a
manner that they could not be reliably shut off quickly in an emergency.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
condition is to:
1) Remove the covers so that the emergency stop buttons can be reliably
shut off
quickly in the event of an emergency as required by American National
Standards
Institute B20.1-1996, section 5.11.2(c) which requires automatically and
remotely
controlled conveyors to be furnished with emergency stop buttons, pull
cords, limit
switches, or similar emergency stop devices.
