Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling loads and struck-by hazards: Frequent and periodic inspections of Dayton electric overhead hoists were not performed. The hoists, located in the washer and dryer areas were used by employees operating the washers and dryers in the Laundry Department. The employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck- by falling loads. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: To conduct a daily hoist inspection that is recommended by ANSI B30.16-1973, Overhead Hoists, to determine that; a) All hoist controls and operating mechanisms are checked for improper operations, b) All hoist safety devices are checked for malfunction, c) All electrical components are checked for deterioration, d) Check lifting hooks for missing safety latches, deformations, or cracks, e) Check load-carrying chains for wear, twist and distortion. 29 CFR 1903.19(c)(1) requires that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
