General-duty citation text
Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by unsecured slabs of granite: a)Worksite - Employees stand in the "fall zone" while handling unsecured pieces of granite measuring approximately 5' x 10', and weighing approximately 700 pounds, that are loaded and unloaded from A-frame racks via use of a lifting clamp which is attached to the center of the unsecured slab; on or about 5/31/06. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to: 1.Install restraining devices to A-frame such as securing arms which can be lowered and angled to secure multiple slabs while in storage and to prevent slabs from falling over when being handled by employees. Restraining devices must be able to support the maximum weight capacity of the storage unit. 2.Develop and implement safe slab handling procedures, specifically addressing separating slabs and attaching lifting devices, when loading and unloading A- Frame storage systems to prevent employee exposure to falling slabs. Note: In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
