Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment which was free from recognized hazards were likely to
cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in that, employees were exposed to
crushing injuries
while manually handling natural stone slabs:
a) On or about August 26, 2004, and at times prior, employees were exposed
to crushing
injuries where they manually prepare natural stone and marble products for
movement.
Among other methods of abatement, feasible and acceptable methods to
prevent this hazard
from occurring again are:
(a) To enforce a policy in which employees are prohibited from standing in
the danger
zone of unsecured hand-supported natural stone slabs;
(b) During stone handling operations ensure web straps holding the natural
stone slabs
remain secured to the racks and around the stored material until the tongs
on the
forklift are attached to the product.
(c) Design and install a rack system that will ensure natural stone slabs
are prevented
from falling over on to employees.
