Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to impalement hazards. a)Construction site at 2500 Gulf States Parkway, Moundville, Al: A contractor installing a new furnace and boiler exposed employees to impalement hazards as they installed 5 1/2 x 3/8 inch studs onto a lower furnace casing which left 5 1/4 inch protruding up for 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours during the installation process. Among other methods of abatement is to cover the studs with plywood orindividual caps on exposed ends until the insulation can be applied.
