Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: At the facility, Packaging and Shipping (P&S) Dept., chemical storage room, forty-nine (49), fifty-five (55) gallon metal drums of 2-Bromopentane, a Class 1B chemical was being stored. The total quantity of this flammable chemical was 2695 gallons, and exceeded the maximum allowable amount of 1375 gallons, according to ANSI/NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Code, 1984, Table 4-4.2.7. This condition exposed Do not allow the quantity of Class 1B chemicals to exceed the maximum allowable amount. This could be achieved by closer monitoring of storage quantities in the chemical storage room. Perform more frequent drum counts in the chemical storage room (e.g., daily instead of weekly).
