Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not
furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a
place of employment free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to a crushed by hazard
a)site - on or about 06/29/04 an employee of Edwards,
Inc.remained underneath an extendable flatbed trailer,
#138158, Peterbilt, type FE248, serial
#13N4482C6Y1593070, license T386603 TN, attempting to
release the pins which would allow the extendable
trailer to collapse while another employee backed the
tow vehicle.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among
others, to correct this hazard is to educate employees on the
necessity and manner in which to tag and remove defective
equipment from service, develop written procedures and training
on employee actions regarding equipment servicing and
maintenance, and prohibit employees from performing and/or
attempting to perform inappropriate and
unapproved servicing and/or
maintenance.
