Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were required to work beneath loads on hydraulic automotive
lifts, that were not
regularly maintained to ensure their continued safe operation.
a) Bay #1:  Employees were allowed to operate an automotive lift which
would not raise high enough for the mechanical safety latches to engage,
exposing employees to injury from being struck by a falling load, on or
about
April 26, 2006.
b) Bay #2:  Employees were allowed to operate an automotive lift which had
cracks in the floor at the area of one post, exposing employees to injury
from
being struck by a falling load, on or about April 26, 2006.
c) Bay #6:  Employees were allowed to operate an automotive lift which
would not raise high enough for the mechanical safety latches to engage,
exposing employees to injury from being struck by a falling load, on or
about
April 26, 2006.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to comply with the requirements of ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000, Standard for
Automotive
Lifts - Safety Requirements for the Operation, Inspection and Maintenance
in its entirety,
with special emphasis on employee training, equipment inspection
procedures and
maintenance.
