Section 6(a) of Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment wich were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees were exposed to: Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico: El patrono no proveyo empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que estan causando o que puedan causar muerto o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados estaban expuestos a: At the checkout of Walmart P.R., Inc. / hnc Sam's Club, the employees performe a chekout procedure checkout, transfering the merchandise to one cart to another cart. Each item is lifted, scanned and then placed in the other empty cart. The following ergonomics hazard were observed: a. Extreme back postures Employees must bend forward at the waist to access product that in on the bottom of the basket of the cart and to place items into the bottom of the basket of the receiving cart. The main reason were the flexion was created are with the deeth of the cart. b. Extension Employees must reach extended distances to the side and out in front of their bodies to move product from cart to cart. Product placed on the lower shelf of the cart can only be reached using extended arm postures since access is restricted due to the presence of the basket of the cart above. c. Repetitive lifting Employees perform higly repetitive lifting. The average lifts per minute when considering the entire span of the observation period was about 4 lifts per minute. d. Extreme hand postures Performing scanning operation with a gun creates several risk factor to the hand. Activate the scanners trigger create an overuse of the tendons of the hand. Additionally when the scanning gun must be held in one hand during the process it limits the amount of assistance wich that hand can provide during the lifting process. Extreme wrist bending is also common as the product is turned in several differente directions so the bar code can be located. Hazard: Increase the force on the back muscles; compressive force on the spine, muscles fatigue, overuse of the tendons of the hand. Among other methods of correction a feasible methods are: a. Installing a conveyour, were the customers unload product onto a conveyour feed belt that brings the product to the cashier. This will eliminate almost half of the torso nending performed by employees. b. Mount the sacnner on support so the employee can use the both hands to lift the product then pass the product under the scanner when the finger force were minimize. En el area de cobro de Walmart P.R., Inc./ hnc Sam's Club, los empleados realizaban el proceso de cobro, transfiriendo la mercancia de un carrito de compras a otro. Cada articulo era levantado y pasado a traves de un "scanner" para obtener el precio de los articulos y luego puesto en otro carrito vacio. Donde se observaron los siguientes riesgos ergonomicos: a. Posturas extremas de la espalda Los empleados tenian que flexionarse hacia el frente en el area de la cintura para obtener los articulos que se encontraban en la parte de abajo del carrito, y luego colocarlos en el otro carrito. La razon principal donde se crea flexion tenia que ver con la profundidad del carrito de compras. b. Extension Los empleados tenian que extenderse para alcanzar los articulos que se encontraban distanciados, hacia los lados, fuera y frente de sus cuerpos para mover los productos de carro a carro. Articulos puestos en las areas mas baja del carrito solo se podian accesar con una postura de estiramiento, ya que los productos estaban inaccesibles debido a la presencia de la canasta. c. Levantamiento y repeticion Los empleados realizaban levantamientos altamente repetitivos. El promedio de levantamiento por minuto considerando el proceso completo fue de 4 levantamientos por minutos. d. Posturas extremas de las manos Operar el "scanner" podia causar ciertos riesgos en las manos. Al presionar el gatillo del "scanner" repetidamente, se sobre utilizan los tendones de la mano. Ademas el sostener el "scanner"con una mano limita la cantidad de asistencia que pueda proveer durante el proceso de levantamiento. Una flexion extrema de la muneca es comun si el producto es girado en varias direcciones para localizar el codigo de barra. Riesgo: Aumento de fuerza en los musculos de la espalda, comprension en la espina dorsal, fatiga del musculo, desgarres musculares, sobre uso del tendon de la mano. Entre otros medios de correccion, varios metodos factibles y aceptables para la correccion de estos riesgos son los siguientes: a. Instalar una correa transportadora ("conveyour"), donde los clientes coloquen los articulos y estos se muevan a traves de la correa transportadora hacia el cajero. Eliminando de esta manera a traves de la correa transportadora hacia el cajero. Eliminando de esta manera la mitad de la flexion del torso. b. Montar el "scanner" en un mostrador que permita el uso de las dos manos para manipular el producto donde se pueda minimizar la cantidad de fuerza del dedo que tiene que emplearse.
