as well as extended reaching while manual handling of various household items from the pallets. 8.The employer will use plastic pallets in the Production Area instead of the wooden pallets. Due to considerably lower weight, the plastic pallets requiremuch less force for their handling. Therefore, regular use of the plastic pallets will help to reduce the risk and prevent MSDs of the back and low back pain Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The associated with manual handling of heavy wooden pallets. The employees were exposed to ergonomic risk factors that contributed to an increased risk of Musculo Skeletal Disorders (MSD's) when performing these job-specific tasks in the production area: 1)Unpacking carton boxes. The employee was cutting sealing tape on one side of the box and then flipped the box and made cuts on the other side, then the box was placed on the floor or on top of a table for sequential feeding the products onto the conveyor. The tasks involved highly repetitive arm/hand movements combined with awkward posture of the upper extremities and wrist. Hazard: Regular exposure to this risk factor is associated with Upper Extremity Cummulative Trauma Disorder (CTD's). Awkward posture is frequently adapted and maintained during the shift. Repeated manual lifting of the boxes combined with bending and twisting of the trunk and manual lifting of heavy wooden pallets and high pace of the job is associated with MSD's of the back and low back pain. 2)Sorting and feeding soup packs into the conveyor. The employee was unloading the carton boxes on top of the table, sorting and aligning them and sliding them over to the other employee who feeds the merchandise onto the conveyor. As part of the job the employee is observed performing highly repetitive arm/hand motions while handling carton boxes as well as repeated lifting of the boxes from the floor level including frequent bending and twisting of the trunk. Hazard: Regular exposure to identified risk factors contribute to MSD's including disorders of the back and low back pain. In addition, the performance of tasks is done while standing or walking on hard cement floors, regular exposure to prolonged standing on hard floors is associated with lower extremity fatigue, discomfort and pain, lower extremity swelling, chronic venous insufficiency, whole body fatigue as well as MSD's of the back and low back pain.3)Palletizing plastic-wrapped soup packages. The employee took the soup packages and stacked them on a wooden pallet placed on the floor. These tasks are associated with highly repetitive motions of the upper extremities as well as frequent bending and twisting of the trunk. The performance of tasks is also associated with prolonged standing and/or walking on hard cement floors. Hazard: Regular exposure to these risk factors contribute to CTD's and MSD's of the back and low back pain. 4)Feeding telephone books onto the conveyor. The employees were placing two telephone books and a brochure on top of each other and fed the items onto the conveyor. The telephone books were taken from wooden pallets and the brochures were taken from boxes on the floor. The employees were observed in awkward postures raising their shoulders and extending their arms in order to reach and grasp the books, including repetitive deep bending and twisting of the trunk when taking the books from the low rows of the pallets. The employees demostrated one- handed lifting using pinch grip while unloading the pallets and placing books onto the conveyor. As part of the task the employees were required to manually handle the wooden pallets once they were unloaded. Hazard: Combined exposure of the employees to awkward posture, repetitive motions, and high pace of the tasks when unloading the pallets and placing the books onto the conveyor contribute to MSD's of the back and upper extremities. The tasks are performed by the employees while standing and/or walking on hard cement floors. Regular exposure to prolonged standing on the hard floor contributes to musculoskeletal symptoms experienced by the employees. The tasks of handling of wooden pallets is associated with MSD's of the back and low back pain. 5)Palletizing plastic-wrapped telephone books. The employee was observed lifting the plastic-wrapped telephone books and stacking them in rows on a wooden pallet. The telephone books were loaded on the pallet until the height of the upper row excedeed shoulder level of the employee forcing the employee to frequently raise and extend his arms when making the upper rows of the pallet. Hazard: The tasks are associated with highly repetitive motions of the upper extremities as well as bending and twisting of the trunk and extended reaching when placing the packaged telephone books on the wooden pallet. Exposure to the identified risk factors contribute to work-related MSD's of the upper extremities and the back including low back pain. Furthermore, the performance of the tasks with prolonged exposure to standing and/or walking on hard cement floors may futher increase the risk of ergonomics-related problems in the workplace. Among the correction methods some feasible and acceptable ones would be: 1.The employer will provide ergonomics awareness training to employees in the Production Area teaching them basic ergonomics principles, ergonomics hazard recognition, problem solving, proper work methods and practices, as well as recognition of early signs and symptoms of MSDs. The strategy will help to reduce the risk and prevent the occurrence of work-related MSDs among the employees performing the job-specific tasks. 2.The employer will provide specific ergonomics training teaching the employees proper manual materials handling techniques. The strategy will help to reduce the risk and prevent exposure to the identified ergonomics risk factors associated with job-specific manual handling tasks being performed in the Production Area. 3.The employer will develop a mechanism for early reporting the signs and symptoms of MSDs as well as making the employees aware about the mechanism and the importance of early recognition and early reporting the signs and symptoms of work-related MSDs. The strategy will help to reduce the incidence and severity of MSDs in the workplace. 4.The employer will assign a person to carry-out an ergonomics program in the facility aimed at the reduction of risk and prevention of MSDs in the workplace. The strategy will help to address MSDs in the workplace. 5.The employer will provide proper matting at various workstations in the Production Area. The strategy will help to reduce the risk and prevent exposure of the employees to prolonged standing on hard floors that has the potential to cause discomfort, fatigue and pain in the lower extremities as well as contribute to MSDs of the back. 6.The employer will provide high friction gloves to the employees performing the job-specific tasks requiring manual dexterity and associated with repetitive grasping, lifting and moving of various products and household items. The strategy will help to reduce force requirements of the tasks associated with unloading of various palletized household items thus having the potential to reduce the risk and prevent MSDs in the workplace. 7.The employer will install height-adjustable scissor lift tables with rotating tops for job-specific tasks involving regular unloading and/or loading of the pallets. The strategy will help to improve postural aspects, accessibility and reduce force requirements of the tasks requiring repetitive bending and twisting of the trunk
