Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:

causando o que
puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados
estaban expuestos
a:
The University of Puerto Rico was previously cited for a violation of this
Occupational Safety
and Health Standard or equivalent standard 6(a) which was contained in PR
OSHA inspection
number 307925107, citation 01, item 01 issued 07/06/2005, with respect to
a workplace located
at the Institute of Neurobiology of UPR RCM:
La Universidad de Puerto Rico fue previamente citada por una violacion a
la Norma de
Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional 6(a) que esta contenida en la inspeccion
307925107, citacion 01,
renglon 01, emitida en 07/06/2005, con respecto a su lugar de trabajo
localizado en el Instituto
de Neurobiologia de UPR RCM:
At the Institute of Neurobiology room 204, the air samples for fungi
(mold) taken inside
the the office surpasssed 1000 Colony Forming Units/m3 (CFU/m3), the fungi
found
to
be in the highest concentrations were proven to be highly allergenic and
accountable for
the production of human mycotoxins like aflatoxins and tricothecenes
resposible for
allergic reactions and respiratory tract infections. The employee
designated in this area
entered sporadically to gather pertinent documents and to look for
information.
Hazard: Allergic reactions and respiratory tract infections.
Among other correction methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement
methods to
correct this hazard would be:
1.Eliminate all sources of microbial contamination by cleanup and
disinfection.
2.Removal of contaminated porous materials, such as: documents, books,
office
equipment.
3.Maintenance of indoor relative humidity levels below 60, and below 50
wherever cold surfaces are in contact with room air.
En el Instituto de Neurobiologia, cuarto 204, las muestras de aire para
hongo tomadas
dentro del cuarto sobrepasaron las 1000 Unidades Formadoras de Colonias/m3
(CFU/m3
por sus siglas en ingles), los hongos encontrados en las concentraciones
mas elevadas
eran altamente alergenicos y responsables por la produccion de micotoxinas
humanas
como las aflatoxinas y las tricotecenes, toxinas responsables de provocar
reacciones
alergicas e infecciones respiratorias. El empleado entraba esporadicamente
a la oficinaa buscar documentos e informacion.
Riesgo: Reacciones alergicas e infecciones del tracto respiratorio.
Entre otros metodos de correccion, varios metodos factibles y aceptables
para corregir
este riesgo serian:
1.Eliminar las fuentes de contaminacion microbiana mediante la limpieza y
desinfeccion.
2.La remocion de los materiales porosos contaminados, tales como:
documentos,
libros y equipo de oficina.
3.Mantener la humedad relativa del aire interior por debajo de 60y por
debajo
de 50 donde las superficies frias esten en contacto con el aire del
cuarto.o
