Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees
in that employees
were exposed to falling loads and falling hoist parts:
a)  On or about 2/8/2005, the Jet Model 3BSH hoist, the Jet Model 2BS
hoist, and the Coffing
Model MDLJL525WA hoist, located in the main work area, were not kept in
good repair in that
the following deficiencies were noted:  (1)  The periodic inspection was
inadequate; (2) The
running rope was not inspected; (3) All control and operating mechanisms
were not inspected;
(4) The hooks were not inspected annually; (5) The markings on one pendent
control box were
illegible; (6) Frequent inspections were not conducted; (7) The employer
did not document
inspections.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is
to develop and implement a preventive maintenance program which
incorporates all
recommendations outlined in the manufacturer's manuals with written,
signed, and dated reports
and also in accordance with ANSI B30.16 and ANSI B30.16 to ensure a safe
and properly
functioning hoist.oning
