furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that
were likely to cause
death or serious harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
possible crush hazards
from falling vehicles while working with defective automobile lifts that
had not been properly
inspected, repaired or taken out of service:
Auto Center Service Area, east wall - the Rotary Lift, fourth lift from
the south wall,
had a defective safety gear to prevent lateral movement of the arms when
working on a
vehicle in an elevated position.
A feasible method to abate this hazard includes, but is not limited to:
1. Establish compliance with the ANSI/ALI ALIOM-2000 "Standard for
Automotive
Lifts-Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance.
2. Daily inspection of lifts before each shift.
3. Ensure maintenance and repairs are implemented by qualified personnel.
4. Remove defective lifts from service.
5. Develop methods for conducting and documenting periodic inspections of
all lifts at
least annually or more often if required by the manufacturer.
Abatement certification is required of this item in accordance with the
requirements of
29 CFR 1903.19(c).
