Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a serious fall hazard:
a)   Can filling line:  On or about 6/3/05, employees crossed the roller
conveyor by
climbing up three steps then stepping across free turning rollers and down
the other side
to access the inside area without a bridge and standard handrails or
suitable means such
as tread plates which can be used between the rollers as walking surface
for designated
operators in the performance of their duties.  Employee(s) are exposed to
a hazard or
falling or getting their foot or shoe caught in the free running rollers.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to install
tread plates or a bridge with standard handrails and adequate clearance
above
the rollers to
provide product to pass by and employees to crossover from each side of
conveyor safely.
