North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational
Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not
furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a
place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees:
a)Cafeteria Kitchen - the 125-volt electrical outlets
protruding from the floor of the kitchen, which
energized the Edlund Can Opener located on the metal
table top, were subject to saturation with water during
washing down and mopping of the floor, and were not
equipped with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)
to protect the employees.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method
to correct this hazard would be to install Ground Fault Circuit
Interrupters (GFCI) for the cafeteria kitchen receptacles.
Reference: National Electric Code 1999, 210-8.(6) Dwelling Units.
All 125-volt, single-phase, 15 and 20 ampere receptacles
installed in the locations specified below shall have ground-
fault circuit-interpreter protection for personnel.
(6) Kitchens. Where receptacles are installed to serve the
counter top surfaces.
(7) wet bar sink. Where receptacles are installed to serve the
counter top surfaces and are located within 6 ft (1.83 m) of the
outside edge of a wet bar sink.
