Section 40.1-51.1(a) Code of Virginia: The employer, Metfab International Inc., did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: The fuel gas fired curing oven ignition system had been out of operation for several months. An employee was required to turn on the gas, enter the oven, and manually ignite the burners, thus exposing the employee to a fire/explosion hazard. National Fire Protection Association Standard 86, [Ovens and Furnaces] regarding fuel gas fired ovens states the following requirement: 4-2.7.3 Burners shall have the ignition source sized and located in a position that provides safe and reliable ignition of the pilot or main flame. A feasible abatement method would be replacement of the faulty ignition system.n
