Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of being struck by and/or crushed by automotive
lift(s) in use with
defects:
a)  Service Shop:  The following automotive lifts were not maintained in
good operating
condition:
1- Lift #1 - Mechanical locking device was inoperative; a wire was being
used
to keep the lift up.
2- Lift #2 - Oil was leaking onto the floor below from the reservoir on
the real
left post of the lift; a stripped screw was causing the leak.
Condition noted on or about 7/27/05.
Feasible and acceptable methods among others to correct the hazard are to:
1.Remove unsafe lifts from service until replacement and/or repairs are
made.
2.Use 4 jack stands to support the vehicle when working under a lift
that does not have a functioning locking device.
