Section 5(a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did
not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized
hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical
harm to employees
in that employees were exposed to: the hazard of being struck by or
crushed when
attempting to use a underhung crane to lift metal tubing. On or about 15
May 2006 an
employees was using a monorail system and underhung crane to move a load.
The
employee did not ensure hat there was no sudden acceleration deceleration
of the moving
load and that the load did not contact any obstruction. The load
oscillated, fell off of the
magnet, hit a table and fell on the employee's foot.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct this
hazard is to (1) follow the direction in Monorail Systems and Underhung
Cranes of ANSI
B30.11-1973, Paragraph 11-3.2.1, Moving the Load, C 1(no sudden
acceleration or
deceleration of the load), C 2 (Loads does not contact any obstruction, f
(operator should
not carry load over people) PG 21, Published by The American Society of
Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) to include manufactures recommendation.
