Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a equipment and or materials if the wire rope that was being used on lifting hoist, broke. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is ensure that wire rope is maintained and replaced according to the manufactures recommendation. A) LOCATION: REAR OF CENTURY FLAT BED TRUCK, REGISTRATION # 56146 THE 9/16" WIRE ROPE USED ON THE RAMSEY WINCH WAS IN POOR CONDITION AND HAD NOT BEEN REMOVED FROM SERVICE. THE ROPE HAD STRANDS THAT HAD NUMEROUS BROKEN WIRES AND WAS STILL IN USE. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO ENSURE THAT THE WIRE IS MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS AND REPLACED WHEN THERE ARE MORE THAN 5 BROKEN WIRES IN ONE STRAND IN ONE ROPE LAY OR MORE THAN TEN RANDOMLY DISTRIBUTED BROKEN WIRES IN ONE ROPE LAY.
