Sharon Foundry was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard 5(a)(1), which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 306113325, Citation Number 01, Item Number 01, issued on February 18, 2005, with respect to the workplace located at 141 Seymour Street, Sharon, WI 53585 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or about April 24, 2007, two employees working as Shifters on the Pouring floor were exposed to carbon monoxide, with 15 minute time weighted average exposures of 227.5 ppm and 260.56 ppm, and instantaneous peak exposures of 646 ppm and 500 ppm, respectively. Carbon monoxide poisons the body by entering the lungs via the normal breathing mechanism and displacing oxygen from the bloodstream. Interruption of the normal supply of oxygen puts at risk the function of the heart, brain and other vital functions of the body. Among other methods, acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to the following: process enclosures with local exhaust ventilation, increased general dilution ventilation, and/or employee rotation.
