Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to anhydrous ammonia refrigerant: (a)On or about 05/19/05, the processing ammonia refrigeration system did not meet requirements for the safe design, construction, installation, and operation as presented in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15-2001, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems, in that the receiver's pressure relief devices did not discharge to the atmosphere at a location at least 15 feet (4.57 meters) above the adjoining ground level (ANSI/ASHRAE 15-2001, Section 9.7.8.2). A feasible and acceptable abatement method is to plumb the safety valve discharge to at least 15 feet above ground level. PLEASE NOTE: DOCUMENTATION AND CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.ION
