Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to "struck by" hazards while being improperly positioned
during the handling of
steel coils:
On or about January 26, 2005 at Dietrich Industries, employees improperly
positioned
themselves while handling steel coils with overhead cranes, in that
employees were exposed to
being struck by unraveling steel coils due to insufficient rebanding of
the steel coils.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to:
Ensure that the existing written company policy on slit coil packaging,
handling, and stacking
procedures are implemented by training all affected employees in the
requirements
of the
procedures and monitor compliance with the written company procedures.
