What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to a hazardous chemical hazard:
(a)Acme Technology Inc, at 1505 Coal Creek Drive Suite A, Lafayette, CO:
On 7/26/06, employees of Acme Technology Inc were exposed to a hazardous
chemical hazard, in that the employer did not segregate incompatible
chemicals
in the hazardous waste storage area. One fifty five gallon plastic barrel
of
waste potassium cyanide solution was stored immediately adjacent to three
five
gallon carboys of Barrett SNR-24 (containing nickel sulfamate) and within
five
feet of three fifty five gallon plastic barrels of waste co-mingled acids
and
bases. No secondary containment was provided for any waste barrels,
carboys, or other containers in the hazardous waste storage area. The
mixture
of potassium cyanide with acid produces poisonous hydrogen cyanide gas.
This condition exposed employees to a poison chemical hazard.
Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to
correct this
hazard is to segregate all containers of potassium cyanide from other
chemicals. Secondary
containment of containers and storage of barrels upon pallets with
containment sumps is an
acceptable method of abatement.
Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (See
enclosed "Sample
Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
