Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to a crushing hazard:
(a)Deco Marble Granite and Tile LLC, dba Deco Stone, at 2118 Stout Street,
Denver, CO: On 9/6/06, Deco Stone did not furnish employment and a place
of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or
likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that
employees
were exposed to a crushing hazard. Employees utilized a two ton capacity
overhead hoist and a dolly to transport granite slabs from a loading dock
to a
fabrication table. Each slab was hoisted onto the dolly and manually
transported approximately twenty feet to the table. Four employees
participated, two at each end, two on the sides of the slab. The slab was
not
fixed to a frame. Employees manually supported the slabs on each side
during
transport. Each slab weighed approximately five hundred pounds. This
condition exposed the employees to a crushing hazard.
Abatement Note: A feasible means of abatement may include, but is not
limited to:
(a)Construct an extension of the existing trolley track to allow the
overhead hoist
to transport the slab directly to the fabrication table. Alternatively,
move the
fabrication table to where the overhead hoist may transport the slab.
(b)Institute and enforce a policy in which employees are prohibited from
standing
or putting any portion of their body in the danger zone of slabs.
(c)Conduct employee training of safe slab handling procedures to ensure
they
fully understand the dangers of putting any portion of their body to the
side of
a moving slab, and the safe methods of maneuvering slabs.
Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (See
enclosed "Sample
Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
