Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crush by injuries. Saw staging area - On or about January 12, 2006, an employee was required to move steel beams using a pendent operated mobile gantry crane. The employee received serious injuries when the steel beams fell due to the failure of a wood block to support the load. The employer did not furnish a place of employment free from recognized hazards. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct the hazard include: (a) Establish a program and procedures using accepted engineering practices to evaluate and determine the load capacities of the wood blocks used to support the steel beams. (b) Establish a training program to educate employees on the proper placement and load capacities of the wood blocks used to support the steel beams. (c) Use wood blocks that are not susceptible to failure by compression or bending for the load that they are required to support. NOTE: 29 CFR 1903.19 REQUIRES THAT YOU PROVIDE CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT FOR THIS ITEM.
