Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burns due to molten metal explosions: (a) Facility: On or about January 12, 2006, the scrap aluminum, used for charging the furnace, was not inspected and/or preheated to eliminate trapped water/moisture. An employee was injured while he was charging a furnace containing molten aluminum with a piece of scrap aluminum that had trapped water in it. In addition, all scrap is stored outside and there are no inspections of the scrap for trapped liquids/excessive moisture prior to charging nor is the scrap preheated, if necessary, prior to charging Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the development and implementation of an inspection and pre-heating procedure prior to the charging of the scrap aluminum.
