Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to inhalation hazards from ammonia: a.East Side of Refrigerated Dock: The ammonia lines entering the warehouse from the outside were not labeled. Among others, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with Paragraph 8 of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), A 13.1-1996, which states: "Positive identification of a piping system content shall be by lettered legend giving the name of the content in full or abbreviated form. Arrows may be used to indicate the direction of flow. Where it is desirable or necessary to give the supplementary information such as hazards or use of the piping system content, this may be done by additional legend or by color applied to the entire system, or as colored bands."
