Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the following:
a.On or about, May 9, 2006, employees engaged in setting 70 foot long wood
trusses on
a new building under construction were exposed to the hazards associated
with truss
collapse due to the lack of inadequate truss bracing.
Among the feasible means of abatement that can be used to correct this are:
Install trusses in accordance with guidance provided by the Wood Truss
Council of
American and Truss Plate Institute, Building Component Safety Information,
BCSI-1-03,
"Guide to Good Practice For Handling, Installing and Bracing of Metal
Plate Connected
Wood Trusses, published Oct 1, 2003, effective Jan 1, 2004 which states:
"Temporary
erection bracing must be applied to three planes of the roof system to
ensure stability:
Plane 1) Top Chord (sheathing), Plane 2) Bottom Chord (ceiling plane), and
Plane 3)
Web Member plane vertical plane perpendicular to trusses."  For trusses
longer than 60
feet, "consult a Registered Professional Engineer to calculate the ground
brace locations
and top chord bracing."
