Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards when transporting natural stone slabs: 1) On September 13, 2005, and at prior times, employees who were transporting natural stone slabs from A-frame racks into the shop were exposed to crushing hazards, in that employees on each end of the slab supported the stone slab by hand in the vertical position on the A-frame, while an employee stood in the fall shadow of the slab to attach fork lift scissor clamp. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable abatement methods are as follows: a) If a mechanical below the hook lifting device is required to be placed on the slab, the slab should be mechanically stabilized or should be resting at a slight angle (not hand supported) against the A-frame rack while the lifting device is situated. A spacer or wedge may be inserted behind the slab to be lifted to provide space at the top to facilitate placement of the mechanical lifting device. The slabs may also be supported with straps wrapped around the entire A-frame rack. The straps could then be loosened just enough to hand raise the slab to the vertical position but not enough to allow the slab to fall. The mechanical lifting device could then be placed on the slab. b) Institute and enforce written procedures in which employees are prohibited from standing in the fall shadow of unstable and/or hand supported stone slabs. Institute written procedures for lifting and transporting stone slabs, and train employees on these procedures. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
