Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to flying plastic projectiles hazards due to mechanical
failure of the facility air
system operating at a pressure in excess of 100 psi as referenced in
ANSI/ASME B31.8 1999.
a)On and prior to February 15, 2006, a one/half inch PVC pipe air system
was
used to transport compressed air on the east side of the shipping terminal
at an
operating pressure of 125 psi from a Coleman air compressor.
Among other methods, one feasible and accepted means to correct this
hazard is
to replace the current PVC compressed air piping system with materials
suitable
for maximum air pressure such as metal pipes or other approved hoses as
recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute and ANSI/ASME B31.1 1976 Power
Piping.
