Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
(a) Model Shop, North End - The Atlas vertical band saw, Company Number
91, Serial Number
202092, used to cut metal, was not equipped with a magnetic restart or
similar device. The saw
was used on or about August 26, 2005.
(b) Model Shop, North End - The Enco horizontal band saw, Serial Number
345540, Model
Number 137-315, used to cut metal, was not equipped with a magnetic
restart or similar device.
The saw was used on or about August 26, 2005.
(c) Shop, South End - The Wellsaw horizontal band saw, Serial Number
10898, Model Number
58B, used to cut metal, was not equipped with a magnetic restart or
similar
device.  The saw
was used on or about August 26, 2005.
(d) Shop, South End - The Carolina horizontal band saw, Serial Number
HD106470, Model
Number HD10, was not equipped with a magnetic restart or similar device.
This saw was used
on or about August 26, 2005.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard includes but
not limited to the following: Conform to ANSI an American National
Standards Institute for
Metal Sawing Machines B11.10 - 2003, Section 6.11 in that the machine
controls shall
incorporate a type of drive motor starter that will disconnect the drive
motor from the power
source in the event of control voltage or power system failure.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in
addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be
included
with
your certification.  This documentation may include, but not limited to,
evidence of the
purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of
abatement, or other
written records.
